Ethereum developers target March 2023 for Shanghai hard fork

Ethereum's "end game" now has a date. What can users expect?

Ethereum developers have been hard at work laying the foundation for a hard fork of the Ethereum blockchain in Shanghai, which will become effective no earlier than March 2023. Or at least that's the date they're targeting. The upgrade is part of a multi-stage effort to achieve Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin's end game for the blockchain — one which he describes as a simple base layer with users "fully comfortable storing their assets in a ZK [zero knowledge]-rollup running a full EVM [Ethereum Virtual Machine]." The Ethereum Foundation has said that it structured the upgrades in this manner to "simplify and maximize focus on a successful transition to proof-of-stake." So what exactly does this multi-stage upgrade entail?  The first phase, dubbed the Shanghai hard fork, will allow users to withdraw their funds and any applicable staking rewards for validating network transactions. The second phase, which is expected to take place around May or June 2023 after the hard fork, will involve launching EIP 4844 — a protocol that introduces proto-danksharding.
