How many Bitcoins would it take to pay off the U.S. National Debt?

Happy Sunday.

I realize that the purpose of a blockchain is to document the past, so maybe we shouldn't spend so much time prophesizing the future...

...but as we approach an important event in Bitcoin's history, here's an interesting thought for the day.

The U.S. National Debt is currently at $24.7 trillion. Bitcoin has a finite supply of 21 million BTC.

If every single Bitcoin ever mined, plus those still to come (and the millions presumed lost) were rounded up and used to pay off the National Debt... the value of one Bitcoin would need to be $1,177,128.

(At the current price of around $7,650, we'd need 3.2 billion BTC to pay it off.)

Here's the weird thing. If Bitcoin actually DID reach $1,177,128... then one Satoshi would be worth just over one cent.

This piece on large numbers and small fractions — and their impact on Bitcoin adoption — is worth reading. Perhaps if Bitcoin settles at $1M per coin, we really will be using sats the way we use pennies today.

What would be a good name for 100 sats, in that case? A Nakabuck? A Finneyback? Send your idea to magazine@cointelegraph.com and I'll publish the best ones!
